The Complete Guide

What is CFA? Everything You Need to Know

If you have ever wondered what separates a fund manager at BlackRock from a finance graduate who never quite broke into the investment world, a significant part of the answer is three letters: CFA. The Chartered Financial Analyst designation is the most rigorous and most respected credential in the investment management industry — and understanding what it involves will take you five minutes to read and potentially transform your career trajectory.

What Does CFA Stand For?

CFA stands for Chartered Financial Analyst. It is awarded by the CFA Institute, a global, nonprofit organisation headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, and founded in 1962. The Institute has over 190,000 active charterholders in 165+ countries. Unlike most finance credentials, CFA Institute writes its own curriculum, sets its own exams, and enforces its own ethics standards, making the designation consistent and trusted worldwide.

To earn the CFA charter, candidates must pass three progressive exams (Level I, II, and III), accumulate at least 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience, and submit two professional references. The experience and exams can run concurrently — you do not need to finish all three levels before working in finance.

The Structure of CFA: 3 Levels, One Direction

The CFA programme is structured around three progressive levels. You must pass each level before sitting the next — there are no exemptions, no shortcuts, and no partial credit. This is deliberate: the rigour of the process is precisely what makes the charter valuable to employers.

Level I
180 MCQs — Tests knowledge and comprehension across all 10 topic areas: Ethics, Quantitative Methods, Economics, Financial Statement Analysis, Corporate Issuers, Equity, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Alternative Investments, Portfolio Management Offered 4 times per year (Feb, May, Aug, Nov). Computer-based test (CBT).
Level II
88 item-set questions (vignette format) — applies knowledge to investment analysis scenarios. Same 10 topic areas with higher weighting on Equity, Fixed Income and Financial Reporting. Offered twice per year (May, Aug). Computer-based test (CBT).
Level III
Essay + item-set questions — Portfolio management, wealth planning, and synthesis of the entire curriculum. The only CFA level with constructed-response (essay) questions. Offered twice per year (May, Aug). Computer-based test (CBT).

Why CFA Has No Exemptions

Unlike ACCA or CPA, CFA offers no exemptions for prior qualifications — not for CA, MBA, ACCA, or any other designation. A CA Final pass holder starts at Level I. A Harvard MBA starts at Level I. This is not a flaw — it is the source of the charter's credibility. Every CFA charterholder worldwide has passed the same three exams. When a hiring manager at a fund house sees "CFA" on a CV, they know exactly what that candidate has demonstrated.

The 4,000-Hour Professional Experience Requirement

To be awarded the CFA charter, you must demonstrate 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience in investment decision-making or analysis. This experience can be accumulated before, during, or after the exams. Many candidates work in finance while studying — counting their work hours toward the experience requirement simultaneously. Once all three exams are cleared and experience is confirmed, you apply for CFA Institute membership and receive the charter.

CFA Fees: What to Expect

CFA Institute charges a one-time enrolment fee (USD 350) and a per-exam registration fee (USD 900–1,250 depending on when you register — early registration is cheaper). NPA Global's tuition fees cover mentoring, study materials, recorded lectures, live sessions, and mock exams. During your free counselling session, our team explains the full fee structure at each level.

Why CFA

Why CFA is the Smartest Investment You Will Ever Make

Eight reasons why CFA is the qualification of choice for anyone serious about a career in investment management, equity research, or wealth management.

🏆

The Gold Standard in Investment Management

CFA is the single most respected credential in the investment industry worldwide. Fund managers, equity analysts, and portfolio managers at top firms are expected — often required — to hold or be pursuing CFA.

🌎

Recognised in 165+ Countries

CFA is accepted everywhere investment decisions are made — London, New York, Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, Mumbai. It is not a regional credential. It is a universal one.

📈

Significant Salary Premium

CFA charterholders globally earn 20–30% more than peers without the credential in comparable roles. In India, a CFA charterholder at the right firm can command Rs.20–50 LPA within 5–7 years.

📋

Practical, Skills-Based Curriculum

Unlike MBA programmes that cover broad management theory, CFA is entirely focused on investment analysis skills — equity valuation, fixed income, derivatives, portfolio construction. Directly applicable from day one.

Ethics at the Core

CFA Institute's Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct are built into every level. Employers know a CFA charterholder has been rigorously trained in fiduciary responsibility — a critical differentiator in client-facing roles.

👥

Powerful Alumni Network

CFA Society India connects you with charterholders across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and beyond. The network opens doors to internships, referrals, and senior mentorship that degrees alone cannot match.

🛠

Complements Any Finance Background

CA, BCom, MBA, BBA, engineering — CFA adds a powerful investment layer regardless of your starting qualification. Many CA Final holders pursue CFA to pivot from audit into asset management.

🚀

Self-Paced with Multiple Exam Windows

Level I is available four times a year. You study at your own pace, sit when ready, and can work full-time simultaneously. The flexibility is designed for serious professionals.

Who Should Do CFA?

CFA is not for everyone — and that is part of what makes it valuable. Here are the five profiles for whom CFA is the right qualification.

🎓
Fresh Graduate

BCom / BBA / MBA Graduates Targeting Investment Roles

If your goal is equity research, portfolio management, or investment banking, CFA is the direct credential. Start Level I in your final year of graduation and enter the job market with Level I already cleared.

📄
CA / CMA Holder

Chartered Accountants Pivoting to Investment Management

CA is exceptional for audit, tax, and compliance. But if you want to move into asset management, equity research, or private equity, CFA is the qualification employers look for. Many CA Final holders pursue CFA to make this switch.

💼
Working Professional

Banking and Finance Professionals Upskilling

If you are currently in banking, treasury, corporate finance, or financial analysis and want to move into a buy-side or sell-side role, CFA signals exactly that intent to hiring managers. Weekend batches are designed for you.

💰
Wealth Management

Aspirants Targeting Private Banking and HNI Advisory

CFA Level III's curriculum is heavily weighted toward wealth planning, private wealth management, and portfolio construction for individual clients. If your goal is to advise high-net-worth individuals, CFA is specifically built for your career.

🌐
Global Career

Professionals Targeting UAE, Singapore or the UK

CFA is recognised by financial regulators and employers in every major global financial centre. If your goal is a role in Dubai, Singapore, London, or New York, CFA is the credential that gets your CV noticed regardless of which Indian university you attended.

Eligibility & Entry Requirements

Who Can Register for CFA? Less Restrictive Than You Think.

One of the most common misconceptions about CFA is that it requires a finance or commerce background. It does not. CFA Institute accepts applications from graduates of any discipline — engineering, law, sciences, arts — as long as you hold a bachelor's degree or are in the final year of your undergraduate programme.

Level I Eligibility

To register for CFA Level I, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Hold a bachelor's (or equivalent) degree — any subject, any university
  • Be in the final year of a bachelor's programme at the time of registration
  • Have 4,000 hours of professional work experience (any industry) — this can substitute for a degree

Charter Eligibility (After Passing All 3 Levels)

Once you pass Levels I, II, and III, you apply for the CFA charter. To be awarded the charter, you must also demonstrate:

  • 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience in investment decision-making or analysis
  • Two professional references (colleagues, supervisors, or CFA charterholders)
  • Agreement to abide by CFA Institute's Code of Ethics and Standards

Experience Can Run Concurrently

You do not need to complete your exams before gaining experience, nor do you need experience before sitting exams. Most candidates study while working — accumulating professional experience hours simultaneously. By the time they pass Level III, many candidates already have sufficient experience for the charter application.

Youngest Possible CFA Charterholder

24

A final-year student who registers for Level I, passes all three levels over 2–3 years while working, and accumulates 4,000 experience hours can receive the CFA charter as early as age 24–25.

The CFA Journey — Your Complete Roadmap

Three levels, one global credential. Here is what each level tests, how long it typically takes, and what career doors it opens along the way.

1
Level I — Foundation
Knowledge & Comprehension Across All 10 Topics
Level I tests breadth — your understanding of all 10 topic areas. The exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions split across two 135-minute sessions. Ethics carries the heaviest single-topic weight (15–20%). Most NPA candidates spend 3–6 months preparing for Level I. With Level I cleared, you can register as a CFA candidate on your CV and begin applying for entry-level analyst roles.
📅 Offered: Feb, May, Aug, Nov
2
Level II — Application
Investment Valuation & Asset Class Analysis
Level II shifts from knowledge to application. Questions come in vignette format — you read a case about a company or portfolio, then answer a set of MCQs based on that scenario. Financial Reporting and Analysis, Equity Investments, and Fixed Income receive the highest topic weightings. This is where many candidates find the real challenge. NPA's structured mentoring focuses heavily on this transition from recall to application.
📅 Offered: May, Aug
3
Level III — Synthesis
Portfolio Management, Wealth Planning & Ethics Integration
Level III is about synthesis — combining everything you have learned to construct and manage investment portfolios. It is the only level with constructed-response (essay) questions, which appear in the morning session. Portfolio Management, Wealth Planning, and Risk Management are the dominant topics. Level III has the highest pass rate (~56%), but only because the candidates at this stage are the most prepared. Clearing Level III makes you eligible to apply for the CFA charter.
📅 Offered: May, Aug
Charter Application
CFA Charterholder — Global Career in Investment Management
Submit your 4,000 hours of professional experience, two professional references, and ethics agreement to CFA Institute. Once approved, you receive the CFA designation — used as "John Smith, CFA" — which signals to employers in 165+ countries that you have met the highest standard in the investment profession.
🏆 Career: 165+ countries, Premium salary, Big 4, Funds, Banks

CFA Has No Exemptions — and That Is a Feature, Not a Bug

Unlike ACCA, CPA, or CMA, CFA grants zero exemptions for prior qualifications. A CA Final pass holder starts at Level I. A PhD in Finance starts at Level I. Here is why that matters — and how to use it strategically.

Your Current QualificationCFA Entry PointStrategic Advantage
BCom / BBA GraduateLevel IStrong FRA foundation — use it
CA Foundation / IntermediateLevel IAccounting skills help in FRA & Corporate Finance
CA Final PassLevel IFRA & Ethics easier — aim for top pass
MBA FinanceLevel IQuant & Economics background helps significantly
ACCA MemberLevel IFRA expertise is a significant advantage
CMA USALevel IManagement accounting crossover helps in Portfolio topics
Engineering + Finance workLevel IStrong in Quant — invest extra time in FRA
No exemptions exist — all candidates begin at Level I regardless of prior qualification.
Prior qualifications are an advantage in specific topic areas, not a shortcut past levels.
This consistency is why employers globally trust the CFA designation unconditionally.

How to Register for CFA Level I

  1. Create a CFA Institute account at cfainstitute.org
  2. Pay the one-time enrolment fee (USD 350)
  3. Register for your chosen exam window (early registration saves ~USD 300)
  4. Upload degree certificate or final-year enrolment letter
  5. Begin NPA preparation — 300 hours recommended for Level I

When to Register: Early vs Standard

CFA Institute offers registration tiers for each exam window. Registering early (6+ months before exam date) can save you USD 200–300 compared to late registration.

NPA Global counsellors will advise you on the optimal exam window based on your preparation timeline.

The CFA designation is the investment industry's hiring signal. Here are the roles CFA charterholders typically hold:

CFA Opens Doors in Every Major Financial Centre

CFA is the one finance credential that works equally well whether you are in Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore, London, or New York. Here is what the credential unlocks in three key markets for Indian professionals:

  • Strong Indian professional community in DIFC
🇸🇬
Singapore
Asia's Investment Hub
  • MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) recognises CFA
  • Home to 1,000+ fund managers and financial institutions
  • SGD 7,000–15,000/month for mid-senior CFA roles
  • Gateway to Southeast Asian and pan-Asian fund management roles
🇬🇧
United Kingdom
Global Investment Capital
  • FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) recognises CFA

Salary and market data is indicative only. Visa eligibility, employer requirements, and regulatory recognition may vary. NPA Global counsellors can advise on realistic pathways based on your individual profile.

Why Many CFA Candidates Fail — and How NPA Global Prevents It

With a global pass rate of ~44% for Level I, most candidates who sit the exam do not pass it. Here are the four most common reasons — and what NPA Global does differently.

✘ Common Problems
📚
Self-Study Without Guidance
900 hours of curriculum with no mentor to tell you what actually gets tested means studying the wrong things at the wrong depth. Most self-study candidates underestimate Level II significantly.
Underestimating Ethics
Ethics is 15–20% of Level I and appears in every level. Candidates who treat it as common sense and skip serious preparation routinely lose marks where they expected to gain them.
📋
Mock Exam Avoidance
CFA exams are time-pressured. Candidates who do not simulate exam conditions — timed, full-length, reviewed — consistently underperform their preparation level on exam day.
🚫
No Study Discipline in Level II Transition
Level I tests memory and recognition. Level II tests application in novel scenarios. Candidates who use the same approach for Level II that worked at Level I consistently fail the transition.
✔ How NPA Global Addresses These
🎓
Structured Level-by-Level Curriculum
NPA Global builds a preparation calendar per level — topic by topic, week by week — so no time is wasted on low-weight topics and high-weight topics get the depth they deserve.
Dedicated Ethics Sessions
Ethics is taught as a separate module with case-based coaching. Our mentors use real-world dilemmas to build the intuition that the CFA Institute actually tests — not just definitions.
📊
Weekly Mocks + Full-Length Practice Exams
Every NPA CFA student sits timed mock exams from month one. We review each attempt question by question, identifying the exact misunderstandings before they carry into the real exam.
🚀
Application-Focused Level II Coaching
We explicitly coach the Level I-to-Level II transition. Our sessions shift from knowledge recall to vignette-based application from the first Level II class — the same shift the exam makes.

CA Gaurav Sabharwal

Chief Career Mentor & Founder — NPA Global

CA Gaurav Sabharwal's career spans the full spectrum of what CFA is designed to teach. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, he joined the Big 4 — working with PwC and Deloitte in audit and advisory — before moving to Nomura's investment banking division, where he worked directly on equity analysis, deal structuring, and capital markets transactions.

That dual background — technical accounting rigour combined with real investment banking execution — is what makes his CFA mentoring distinctive. When CA Gaurav explains financial reporting analysis in Level II, he explains it the way it is actually used on the buy-side. When he teaches derivatives in Level III, he draws from instruments he worked with in practice, not from textbook abstractions.

Having spent 15+ years in finance education, CA Gaurav has seen exactly where and why CFA candidates fail at each level. His structured approach — ethics-first, application-focused, mock-exam-driven — is built entirely around preventing those failure points.

How many levels does CFA have, and must they be taken in order?
CFA has three levels — Level I, Level II, and Level III — and they must be passed in sequence. You cannot sit Level II until you have passed Level I, and you cannot sit Level III until you have passed Level II. There are no exemptions for any prior qualification.
How long does CFA take to complete in India?
Most candidates complete all three levels in 2–4 years. Level I alone typically requires 3–6 months of dedicated preparation (300 hours recommended). Many Indian candidates — especially those working full-time — take one level per year. The fastest theoretical path is 18 months if you pass consecutive windows, but NPA Global recommends adequate preparation time over speed.
Are there any exemptions from CFA for CA, MBA, or ACCA holders?
No. CFA Institute grants zero exemptions to any prior qualification — including CA Final, MBA, ACCA, CPA, or any other credential. Every candidate begins at Level I. This is by design: the consistency of the qualification is precisely what makes it trusted by employers globally.
Exam & Preparation
How many attempts are allowed for each CFA level?
CFA Institute allows up to six attempts per level. Level I is offered four times per year (Feb, May, Aug, Nov). Levels II and III are offered twice per year (May, Aug). There is no penalty for failing other than the time and cost of re-registering.
Is CFA harder than CA (Indian Chartered Accountancy)?
They are difficult in different ways. CA is harder in terms of volume — 16+ papers, group-based passing, three attempts per year. CFA is harder in terms of depth of investment knowledge — especially Level II, which requires genuine application-level understanding of financial analysis and valuation, not just recall. CA Final holders typically find CFA Level I manageable but Level II significantly more challenging than any CA paper they have sat.
What is the pass rate for CFA in India?
CFA Institute does not publish country-specific pass rates. Global pass rates are approximately 44% for Level I, 45% for Level II, and 56% for Level III (as of 2023 data). Indian candidates at well-coached institutes like NPA Global typically perform close to or above the global average, particularly when ethics preparation is taken seriously.
Can I work full-time while studying for CFA?
Yes — and it is actually how most CFA candidates study. NPA Global's weekend batch and online live batch are specifically designed for working professionals. Working while studying also has a practical advantage: the professional experience you accumulate counts toward the 4,000-hour charter requirement.
Fees & Career
What is the CFA exam fee in India?
CFA Institute charges a one-time enrolment fee of USD 350, plus a registration fee of USD 900–1,250 per level (depending on early vs. late registration). Fees are paid in USD via Indian credit/debit cards with international capability. NPA Global's tuition fees are charged separately and cover mentoring, study materials, recorded lectures, and mock exams. Contact our counsellors for current tuition fee details.
CFA vs MBA Finance — which is better for an investment career?
For investment-specific roles — equity research, portfolio management, asset management — CFA is generally preferred over an MBA because it signals specific technical competency in investment analysis, not broad management skills. An IIM MBA opens general finance doors very effectively. A CFA opens investment-specific doors globally. If your goal is specifically the investment side of finance and you do not have an IIM/top-10 MBA, CFA is typically the higher-return credential for the career goal.
Is CFA useful for finance jobs in India, or is it mainly for global roles?
Both. In India, CFA is highly valued in Mumbai's BFSI sector — particularly at mutual fund houses (AMCs), investment banks, wealth management firms, and large corporate treasury departments. Indian companies such as HDFC AMC, ICICI Securities, Motilal Oswal, Edelweiss, and Kotak actively hire or prefer CFA candidates. It also significantly increases your competitiveness for Dubai, Singapore, UK, and US roles.
