The Complete Guide

What is CMA USA? — Everything You Need to Know

The CMA USA — Certified Management Accountant — is a globally recognised professional qualification awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants, one of the world's largest and most respected accounting bodies, headquartered in the United States and operating in over 100 countries.

If ACCA and CA are qualifications built around financial accounting, audit, and compliance — the work of recording, verifying, and reporting what a business has done — then CMA USA is built around something different: the work of deciding what a business should do next. Management accounting. Strategic finance. FP&A. The language of the boardroom.

This is why CMA USA holders are found not just in accounting departments but in the finance leadership teams of Fortune 500 companies, in CFO offices, in FP&A teams at global MNCs, and in the strategic finance functions of the world's fastest-growing businesses.

The Two-Part Structure

CMA USA is divided into two parts — both must be cleared to earn the designation:

Part 1
Financial Planning, Performance & Analytics
External financial statements  ·  Planning, budgeting & forecasting  ·  Performance management  ·  Cost management  ·  Internal controls  ·  Technology & analytics
Part 2
Strategic Financial Management
Financial statement analysis  ·  Corporate finance  ·  Decision analysis  ·  Risk management  ·  Investment decisions  ·  Professional ethics
Exam format: Each part is a four-hour computer-based exam — 100 multiple choice questions followed by two essay questions. The MCQ section determines eligibility for the essay section: a score of 50% or more on MCQs is required to proceed. Total time: 3 hours for MCQs, 1 hour for essays.
Who Awards It — and Why It Matters

The IMA — Institute of Management Accountants — was founded in 1919 and has over 150,000 members and 300,000 CMA-certified professionals across 150 countries. The CMA designation is not a regional credential. It is a globally portable professional qualification that signals to any employer, anywhere in the world, that the holder understands both the language of finance and the logic of business.

In India, CMA USA holders work at Big 4 firms, in the finance teams of IT multinationals, in FMCG companies, at investment banks, and increasingly in the FP&A functions of tech companies where financial storytelling — the ability to turn data into business decisions — is the most valued skill in the room.

CMA USA vs CMA India — The Difference

This is one of the most common questions at NPA Global counselling sessions. The short answer: they are different qualifications, with different syllabi, different awarding bodies, and very different global recognition profiles.

  CMA USA CMA India
Full Name Certified Management Accountant Cost and Management Accountant
Awarded By IMA (Institute of Management Accountants), USA ICAI CMA (Cost Accountancy Institute), India
Syllabus Focus Strategic management accounting, FP&A, corporate finance Cost accounting, taxation, audit
Global Recognition 100+ countries, MNC-preferred, CFO-track Primarily India-recognised
Papers / Parts 2 parts 13 papers across foundation, inter, final
Career Outcome FP&A, management accounting, MNC finance leadership Cost accountant, industry finance, government

Both are credible qualifications in their own context. CMA USA is the right choice if your goal is to work in an MNC finance team, pursue an FP&A career, or build toward a global CFO-track role. If your goal is cost accountancy practice in India or government work, CMA India serves that purpose better. When in doubt, a 30-minute conversation with CA Gaurav will give you the honest answer for your specific situation.

Why CMA USA

Why Choose CMA USA?

There are dozens of finance qualifications available to commerce students and working professionals in India. Here is why CMA USA, specifically, deserves serious consideration.

1
It is the qualification that gets you into the room where decisions are made

Financial accountants report on the past. Management accountants shape the future. CMA USA is built entirely around the second role — budgeting, forecasting, strategy, performance management, corporate finance. These are the skills that take you from a finance team member to a finance team leader. The CFOs and Finance Directors at the world’s best companies did not get there by being excellent at audit. They got there by being excellent at CMA-type thinking.

2
Two parts. Achievable in 6–18 months.

Unlike qualifications with 10–14 papers spread across three levels, CMA USA has two parts. A focused candidate with the right study plan can complete both within 12 months while working. This is not a shortcut — the exams are rigorous and the pass rates reflect that. But it is a realistic qualification for a working professional who cannot spend three years studying full-time.

3
Work experience counts — and can run concurrently

CMA USA requires two years of relevant work experience in management accounting or financial management. Crucially, this experience does not need to be completed before you sit the exams — it can run alongside your studies and be submitted any time within seven years of passing. For a working professional, this means your current job is already part of your qualification journey. You are not starting from zero.

4
Recognised by the employers that matter most in India

Big 4 firms, IT multinationals (Infosys, TCS, Wipro finance teams), FMCG companies, banks, and consulting firms in India increasingly value CMA USA — particularly for FP&A, business finance, and strategic finance roles. As Indian companies expand globally and global companies deepen their India operations, the demand for professionals who think in management accounting terms is growing every year.

5
Complements CA — does not replace it

One of the most valuable combinations in Indian finance right now is CA + CMA USA. The CA gives you technical depth in audit, tax, and financial reporting. CMA USA gives you the strategic and management accounting lens that CA does not deeply cover. Together, they make a professional who can speak to every function of a finance team — and be considered for leadership roles that pure specialists cannot fill.

6
For working professionals — the honest advantage

Most institutes sell CMA USA to working professionals with vague promises about ‘salary hikes’ and ‘placement assistance.’ At NPA Global, we do not do that. What we offer instead is more useful: a personalised study plan built around your actual schedule, honest guidance about what CMA USA can and cannot do for your specific career, and concrete support in understanding how to transition from your current role into the functions — FP&A, business finance, strategic planning — where CMA USA holders are most valued. More on this in the Working Professionals section below.

Who Is CMA USA For

Who Should Do CMA USA?

CMA USA is not for everyone — and we will tell you honestly if it is not right for your situation. But for the right person, it is one of the most valuable qualifications available. Here is who that person typically is.

Working Professionals — The Honest Version

This section is intentionally different in tone — because working professionals have been lied to enough.

You are already in finance or accounting. You have two, five, maybe ten years of experience. You are good at your job. And you are stuck — not because you lack ability, but because your current role and credentials do not signal what you are capable of.

CMA USA can change that. But not through ‘placement assistance’ — a phrase that, for working professionals, is usually meaningless. No coaching institute is placing experienced finance professionals into new roles the way they place freshers. That is not how the experienced hire market works, and any institute telling you otherwise is selling you something that does not exist.

What NPA Global offers working professionals instead is this: a 100% recorded CMA USA programme with a personalised study plan built around your actual schedule. Doubt-clearing sessions with CA Gaurav personally. And honest career transition guidance: how to position your CMA USA alongside your existing experience to move into FP&A, management accounting, and business finance roles.

This is what experienced professionals actually need. Not a placement cell. A mentor who understands both the qualification and the career market — and will tell you the truth about both.

After Class 12 / BCom / MCom Students

You are building your career from the ground up and want a qualification that takes you into the strategic side of finance — not just bookkeeping and compliance. CMA USA, started alongside or immediately after your degree, can have you qualified before most of your peers have figured out what they want to do. With NPA Global’s live batch programme and CA Gaurav’s personal mentorship, you will not just pass the exams — you will understand the business world behind them.

CA Students and CA Dropouts

If you are studying for CA — or have attempted it — your foundation in financial accounting, taxation, and audit is already strong. CMA USA builds on that foundation and takes you somewhere CA does not: strategic management accounting, FP&A, corporate finance. Many CA students do both. And for CA dropouts specifically, CMA USA is not a consolation prize — it is a genuinely different qualification that opens doors CA does not, particularly in MNC finance and global FP&A roles.

Finance Professionals Targeting FP&A Specifically

FP&A — Financial Planning and Analysis — is the fastest-growing function in corporate finance globally. It is where the CFO’s office meets the business. It is where financial modelling, forecasting, and strategic narrative come together. And it is where CMA USA holders are most valued. If FP&A is your target, CMA USA is your most direct route — and CA Gaurav’s guidance on the FP&A transition is something you will not find at any other institute.

Graduates Targeting MNC Finance Careers

If your target employers are multinationals — in IT, FMCG, consulting, banking, or manufacturing — CMA USA is a credential they recognise and respect. BCom and MCom graduates who add CMA USA to their profile are consistently competing for roles above their academic peers. The qualification signals that you think in business terms, not just accounting terms.

Eligibility & Registration

CMA USA Eligibility — Who Can Register?

Academic Eligibility

CMA USA requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in any discipline. Commerce, science, arts — the degree subject does not matter. What matters is that you hold a degree.

Exception: You can sit the CMA USA exams before completing your degree — but you must complete the degree before the CMA designation is awarded. This means final-year students can and should begin their CMA USA preparation now.
Work Experience Requirement

Two years of continuous professional experience in management accounting or financial management is required for the CMA designation. Key points:

  • The work experience does not need to be completed before sitting the exams
  • It can be accumulated before, during, or after passing the exams
  • You have seven years from the date of passing to submit the experience
  • Part-time work counts — if the work itself is relevant to management accounting or financial management
  • For students with no work experience: start your studies now, accumulate experience through internships or your first job, and submit once you have the required two years
IMA Membership

To register for the CMA exam, you must be an IMA member. Annual membership fee applies — student rates are available for those below 30. The membership gives access to study resources, the IMA community, and professional development content beyond the exam itself.

Registration Process — Step by Step

1
Join IMA as a member — visit imanet.org
2
Register for the CMA programme — pay the entrance fee
3
Register for the exam in your chosen window through IMA
4
Schedule your exam at a Prometric centre in India
5
Clear both parts within three years of programme registration
Career Opportunities

CMA USA Career Opportunities — Where This Qualification Takes You

CMA USA holders are found at every level of the finance function — from analyst to CFO. But they are disproportionately represented in one area: the strategic finance roles that sit at the intersection of numbers and decisions. Here is where CMA USA takes you.

Role-Level Breakdown

Financial Analyst / Senior Analyst

The entry-level role for CMA USA holders — financial modelling, reporting, variance analysis.

India: INR 5–10 LPA for freshers with CMA USA
FP&A Analyst / Manager

The natural home for CMA USA. Budgeting, forecasting, business partnering. One of the fastest-growing finance roles globally.

INR 10–25 LPA at mid-level
Management Accountant

Core CMA USA territory — cost analysis, performance reporting, management information. India + global roles.

Finance Business Partner

Working directly with business units to drive financial performance. CFO-adjacent role at many MNCs.

Finance Controller

Ownership of the full finance function at a business unit or regional level. Senior CMA USA career milestone.

CFO / VP Finance

The long-term destination for CMA USA + experience. Management accounting thinking at the highest level.

Cost & Budget Analyst

Specialist role in manufacturing, FMCG, and industrial companies. CMA USA is the standard credential.

Internal Audit Manager

Risk-focused finance role — Part 1’s internal controls section makes CMA USA holders strong internal audit candidates.

Industry Sectors Where CMA USA Is Valued

IT / Technology MNCs — Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Accenture, Capgemini finance teams
FMCG / Consumer Goods — Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Nestle, P&G — cost and management accounting
Banking & Financial Services — finance function, FP&A, treasury
Manufacturing — cost management, production finance, operational analytics
Consulting — McKinsey, Deloitte, EY advisory — strategy and finance blend
Pharmaceutical — MNC pharma finance teams across India and globally
Retail & E-Commerce — business finance, unit economics, growth analytics
Startups & VC-backed Companies — CFO-track roles where management accounting thinking is premium
The FP&A Opportunity — A Special Note

FP&A is the single fastest-growing function in corporate finance in India and globally. Companies are building FP&A teams from scratch as the finance function evolves from backward-looking reporting to forward-looking business partnering. CMA USA is the most directly relevant qualification for FP&A roles — and the demand is significantly ahead of supply. If FP&A is your target, there has never been a better time to be CMA USA-qualified.

Salary Benchmarks

CMA USA Salary in India — Realistic Benchmarks

These are market benchmarks based on industry data and NPA Global mentor experience. They are ranges, not guarantees. Actual salary depends on your prior experience, the employer, the city, and the role. We believe in giving you realistic numbers — not inflated figures designed to sell you a course.

Fresh graduate + CMA USA (no experience) INR 4–7 LPA Entry-level analyst roles at MNCs and consulting firms
1–3 years experience + CMA USA INR 7–14 LPA FP&A analyst, management accountant, financial analyst
3–6 years experience + CMA USA INR 14–25 LPA FP&A manager, finance business partner, senior analyst
7–10 years experience + CMA USA INR 25–45 LPA Finance Controller, Head of FP&A, VP Finance
Leadership / CFO track (10+ years) INR 45 LPA+ CFO, Finance Director, Group Controller
UAE / Middle East (mid-level) AED 12,000–20,000 Per month — strong market for CMA USA holders
USA / Canada (for those who migrate) USD 70,000–110,000 Per year — CMA USA is a North American credential with strong recognition

For working professionals adding CMA USA to an existing career: the qualification alone does not automatically increase your salary. What it does is make you eligible for roles you were not previously considered for — FP&A roles, finance leadership roles, roles at companies that filter for professional qualifications. The salary increase comes from the role change that CMA USA enables, not from the credential sitting passively on your resume.

This is the honest conversation that NPA Global has with every working professional before enrollment. CA Gaurav will tell you exactly what CMA USA can do for your specific situation — and what it cannot.

The Working Professional Track

CMA USA for Working Professionals — The Honest Track

This section exists because working professionals in India have been let down by the finance education industry. Repeatedly. And we think it is time someone said that out loud.

What Every Other Institute Tells You
“Our placement cell will help you get a new job after CMA USA.”

Here is the reality: placement cells work for freshers. They work because freshers fit a template — no experience, no salary expectation baggage, easily placed in entry-level roles at companies the institute has tie-ups with. A working professional with 5 years of experience, a current salary of INR 8 LPA, and a specific career transition goal does not fit that template. No placement cell — at any institute — is meaningfully placing experienced professionals into mid-level MNC roles.

This is not a criticism of placement cells. It is simply a description of how the experienced-hire job market works. Mid-level roles are filled through LinkedIn, referrals, direct applications, and headhunters — not through institute placement drives.

What NPA Global Actually Offers You Instead

When a working professional joins NPA Global’s CMA USA recorded track, here is what they actually get:

1
A personalised study plan built around your real schedule

Not a timetable designed for a full-time student with six hours a day to study. A plan built around your actual availability — your work hours, your commute, your family time — that tells you exactly what to study, when, in what order, to maximise your preparation within the time you realistically have.

This is something no other institute offering a recorded CMA USA programme does. Most hand you access to videos and leave you to figure out the rest. NPA Global’s approach is to make the schedule as personalised as the mentorship.

2
Honest career transition guidance — the FP&A pathway

The most valuable thing CA Gaurav does for working professional CMA USA students is not teach them the syllabus. It is help them understand how to use the qualification to actually change their career trajectory.

View FP&A guidance details ▼
  • How to position CMA USA alongside your existing experience when applying for FP&A roles
  • Which types of companies and roles are realistic targets given your background and years of experience
  • How to update your resume and LinkedIn to signal the career transition — not just the credential
  • How to talk about your experience in interviews for roles that require management accounting thinking
  • What additional skills — financial modelling, Power BI, Excel advanced, SQL basics — complement CMA USA for FP&A transitions
  • Which job boards, communities, and networks are actually useful for mid-level finance career transitions in India
3
Doubt clearing with CA Gaurav personally

Recorded learning without a way to ask questions is just expensive video content. NPA Global’s working professional track includes scheduled doubt-clearing sessions with CA Gaurav — not a junior faculty member, not a chatbot. If you are stuck on Part 2’s corporate finance section at 11pm on a Tuesday, you note the doubt, bring it to the session, and get it resolved by someone who has taught this material and lived the career it leads to.

4
A realistic timeline that does not destroy your life

Most working professionals who attempt CMA USA through other programmes burn out within three months — because the study schedule assumes a level of availability they do not have. NPA Global’s approach is to build your timeline around reality, not aspiration. For most working professionals with 2–3 hours available per day, Part 1 in 4–6 months and Part 2 in 4–6 months is realistic. CA Gaurav will tell you your realistic timeline in your first counselling session.

Who This Track Is Specifically For
  • Accountants and finance professionals currently working who want to move into FP&A or management accounting
  • Finance professionals at INR 5–15 LPA targeting roles at INR 12–25 LPA in MNC finance teams
  • Professionals with CA Foundation or CA Intermediate background who are working and want a globally recognised management accounting credential
  • Finance analysts wanting to move from pure reporting roles into business partnering and strategic finance
  • Professionals targeting UAE, Singapore, or other international markets where CMA USA is recognised
Why NPA Global

Why Choose NPA Global for CMA USA?

CMA USA can be studied at several places in India. Some are online platforms with recorded content and no mentor access. Some are large institutes where you are one of hundreds. Some make promises about placement that they cannot keep for experienced professionals.

NPA Global is different — not because we claim to be, but because of specific decisions we have made about how CMA USA should be taught.

CA Gaurav Teaches CMA USA Personally

At NPA Global, CMA USA is taught by CA Gaurav Sabharwal — the Chief Career Mentor — personally. Not delegated to junior faculty. Not outsourced to guest lecturers. CA Gaurav, with his Big 4 background, investment banking experience at Nomura, and 15+ years of teaching, teaches both Part 1 and Part 2. Every concept, every session, every doubt-clearing call. This is rare. It is deliberate. And it makes a measurable difference to how deeply students understand the material and how confidently they perform in the exams.

Two Tracks — Built for Two Different Lives

Most institutes offer one CMA USA programme and expect everyone to fit it. NPA Global offers two: a live batch programme for students, and a recorded programme with a personalised study plan for working professionals. These are not the same programme with a different delivery mode — they are fundamentally different learning experiences designed for fundamentally different lives.

35+ Years of Legacy Behind Every Session

NPA was among the first institutions in Central India to formally teach CA and CS. That institutional memory — understanding how students learn, where they struggle, what they need to succeed — informs every aspect of the CMA USA programme. This is not a new edtech product. It is a new programme delivered by an institution with over three decades of education behind it.

Career Mentorship, Not Just Exam Coaching

Passing CMA USA is the beginning, not the end. NPA Global’s Career Development Center — ATS resume building, LinkedIn branding, interview preparation, career transition guidance — is available to CMA USA students as it is to all NPA Global students. For working professionals, the career transition sessions are tailored to their specific situation — not a generic ‘how to write a resume’ workshop.

Physical Campus and Hybrid Infrastructure

For live batch students, NPA Global’s Indore campus provides classrooms, library, study rooms, and hostel facilities. For online and recorded students, the same faculty, the same LMS, and the same mentor access are available from anywhere in India. The campus is a trust signal — a permanent physical institution behind the digital learning experience.

At NPA Global, CMA USA is not a product we sell. It is a career transformation we personally oversee — from your first counselling session to your first relevant job offer.

Your CMA USA Mentor

Meet Your CMA USA Mentor — CA Gaurav Sabharwal

CA Gaurav Sabharwal does not just teach the CMA USA syllabus. He teaches you how to think like a management accountant — and how to use that thinking to build a career that goes somewhere.

Why CA Gaurav Teaches CMA USA Personally

CMA USA is a qualification built around real-world financial management — the decisions that businesses make, the tools that finance teams use, the thinking that separates a finance professional from a finance leader. Teaching it well requires someone who has been inside those decisions, used those tools, and made that transition. CA Gaurav has.

His Big 4 background in advisory. His investment banking work at Nomura. His practicing CA experience. His 15 years of teaching students who went on to build exactly the careers CMA USA is designed for. These are not credentials on a wall. They are the context behind every session he teaches.

From BCom to MNC Finance Analyst — Vikram’s Story

Vikram graduated BCom from a college in Indore with a clear ambition and no clear path. He knew he wanted to work in finance — but not in a CA firm doing audit. He wanted the finance team at a company that actually built something. The problem was that his BCom alone was not enough to land him where he wanted to go.

A counselling session with CA Gaurav changed his understanding of what was possible. His BCom was not a weakness — it was the foundation CMA USA was designed to build on. He enrolled in NPA Global’s live batch, cleared Part 1 in six months, Part 2 in seven. By the time he cleared his second part, he had already applied for three FP&A analyst roles using the resume and LinkedIn profile built in NPA Global’s career bootcamp.

Today Vikram works as a Financial Analyst at an IT services company in Pune, working in the FP&A team on budgeting and forecasting. His starting salary was more than twice what his BCom peers accepted in their first roles. He is preparing his IMA work experience submission.

From Accounts Executive to FP&A Analyst — Neha’s Story

Neha had five years of accounting experience — Tally, month-end closing, basic MIS reporting — and a growing frustration. She was good at her job. She was paid decently. And she was completely invisible to the kind of companies she actually wanted to work for.

She had looked at CMA USA before finding NPA Global. She had enrolled at another online platform, watched twelve hours of recorded content, understood none of it in the context of her actual career, and cancelled her subscription after two months. When she came to NPA Global, her first question to CA Gaurav was not about the syllabus. It was: ‘Will this actually help me, or am I wasting my time again?’

CA Gaurav spent forty-five minutes with her — not selling the programme but understanding her situation. He explained what CMA USA could specifically do for someone with her background and her target roles. He was honest about what it could not do — that no placement cell would magically place her into an MNC. What it could do was make her a credible candidate for FP&A roles that her current profile could not access.

Neha joined the recorded professional track. CA Gaurav built her a study plan around her work schedule — two hours on weekdays, four on weekends. She cleared Part 1 in five months. During the career transition sessions, she rebuilt her resume to frame her five years not as ‘accounting experience’ but as the financial operations foundation of an FP&A career in progress.

She applied to seven roles. She got three interview calls. She accepted an offer as an FP&A Analyst at a manufacturing MNC at a 65% salary increase from her previous role. She did not need a placement cell. She needed a mentor who understood both the qualification and the career.

Prateek was in his second attempt at CA Intermediate when he came to NPA Global — not to quit CA, but to understand his options. He had been told by multiple people that CA and CMA USA were competing qualifications and he should choose one. CA Gaurav told him something different.

For Prateek’s specific career target — finance at a global MNC, not a CA firm — the combination of CA Inter and CMA USA was stronger than either alone. CA gave him the technical accounting and taxation depth that Indian employers respected. CMA USA gave him the management accounting and strategic finance framework that MNC finance teams were hiring for. The two qualifications were not competitors. They were complements.

Prateek enrolled in NPA Global’s live CMA USA batch alongside his CA studies. CA Gaurav structured his sessions to complement, not conflict with, his CA preparation — sharing the overlapping areas, flagging where the two syllabi diverge, and helping him see how the same concept is approached differently in each qualification. He cleared CMA USA Part 1 while preparing for his CA Inter attempt. He is now in his final year, with CMA USA Part 2 cleared, and two interview calls already from MNC finance teams who liked his combined profile.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — CMA USA in India

CMA USA Basics
What is CMA USA?
CMA USA — Certified Management Accountant — is a globally recognised professional qualification awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), headquartered in the United States. Unlike financial accounting qualifications that focus on reporting and compliance, CMA USA is built around management accounting, strategic finance, FP&A, and business decision-making. It covers financial planning, performance management, cost management, corporate finance, and professional ethics. CMA USA holders are found in FP&A teams, CFO offices, and finance leadership roles at MNCs and multinationals globally.
What does CMA USA stand for?
CMA USA stands for Certified Management Accountant, a professional designation awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), USA. The word “management” is significant — it reflects the qualification’s focus on management accounting, the forward-looking, decision-support side of finance, as opposed to financial accounting which focuses on historical reporting and compliance. The “USA” distinguishes it from CMA India, which is awarded by a separate body — the Institute of Cost Accountants of India — with a different syllabus and primarily India-focused recognition.
Who awards the CMA USA qualification?
CMA USA is awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), founded in 1919 and headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey, USA. The IMA is one of the world’s largest professional accounting bodies, with over 150,000 members across 150 countries and more than 300,000 CMA-certified professionals globally. To earn the CMA USA designation, candidates must pass both exam parts, hold a bachelor’s degree, complete two years of relevant work experience in management accounting or financial management, and maintain active IMA membership.
Is CMA USA the same as CMA India?
No. CMA USA and CMA India are entirely separate qualifications with different awarding bodies, syllabi, and career outcomes. CMA USA is awarded by the IMA (USA) and focuses on management accounting, strategic finance, and FP&A — recognised in 150+ countries globally. CMA India is awarded by the ICAI CMA (Institute of Cost Accountants of India) and focuses on cost accounting, costing systems, and domestic regulatory requirements, with primarily India-based recognition. If your goal is a global finance career or MNC finance team, CMA USA is the relevant qualification.
How many people hold the CMA USA designation globally?
As of current IMA figures, there are over 300,000 CMA-certified professionals across more than 150 countries, with IMA membership exceeding 150,000 globally. The CMA designation has been awarded for over 50 years. In India, the number of CMA USA holders has grown significantly as more finance professionals recognise the qualification’s value in MNC finance roles and FP&A positions. India is among the fastest-growing markets for CMA USA candidates, driven by demand from IT multinationals and FMCG companies expanding their management accounting functions.
Is CMA USA recognised in India?
Yes. CMA USA is increasingly recognised by employers in India, particularly Big 4 firms, IT multinationals, FMCG companies, banks, and consulting firms hiring for finance, FP&A, and management accounting roles. CMA USA is not a regulated qualification in India like ICAI designations — it is a globally-earned professional credential that signals competence in management accounting. Indian employers who value management accounting thinking, strategic finance capability, and global finance standards consistently recognise and actively hire CMA USA holders for mid-to-senior finance positions.
Eligibility
What is the eligibility for CMA USA?
CMA USA requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in any discipline — commerce, science, arts, or engineering. The degree subject does not matter; the requirement is that you hold a degree. Additionally, two years of relevant professional experience in management accounting or financial management are required for the designation, but this experience can be completed before, during, or after passing the exams within seven years of passing. You must also be an active IMA member to register for the exam.
Can I do CMA USA after BCom?
Yes. BCom is an excellent academic foundation for CMA USA, and the combination is increasingly valuable in the Indian finance job market. Your BCom gives you the accounting basics that Part 1 builds on. At NPA Global, many CMA USA students are BCom graduates targeting FP&A, management accounting, and MNC finance roles that their BCom alone would not access. You can start CMA USA preparation immediately after completing BCom — or even in your final year, sitting the exams before graduation and having results held until your degree is complete.
Can I do CMA USA while studying CA?
Yes — and at NPA Global, CA Gaurav actively recommends this combination for students targeting MNC finance careers. The CA and CMA USA syllabi overlap in financial accounting areas, making concurrent study efficient. CA gives you technical depth in audit, tax, and financial reporting. CMA USA gives you the strategic management accounting and FP&A framework that CA does not deeply cover. The combination makes you a stronger candidate for finance leadership roles than either qualification alone. CA Gaurav has a structured approach to managing both syllabi simultaneously to avoid conflicts.
Can a Class 12 student register for CMA USA?
Not directly — CMA USA requires a bachelor’s degree for the full designation. However, you can sit the CMA USA exams before completing your degree, with results held until your degree is complete. This means you can begin preparation during your BCom and potentially clear both parts before graduating. At NPA Global, we advise Class 12 students to start their degree, begin CMA USA preparation in their second or third year, and aim to clear both parts by graduation — entering the job market with a full degree and CMA USA simultaneously.
Do I need work experience before the CMA USA exam?
No. You can sit and pass both parts of the CMA USA exam without any work experience. Work experience is required for the CMA designation, not the exam. Two years of relevant professional experience in management accounting or financial management are needed, but this can be completed before, during, or after passing the exams. You have seven years from the date of passing to submit the experience. For students with no experience: begin studying now, accumulate experience through your first job or internship, and submit once you have two qualifying years.
What kind of work experience counts for CMA USA?
The IMA requires two years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management. Relevant roles include financial analyst, FP&A analyst, management accountant, cost accountant, finance business partner, internal auditor, budget analyst, and similar roles involving management accounting responsibilities. The work must be at a professional level — not purely clerical data entry. Part-time roles count if the work itself qualifies. The experience does not need to be in a specific industry. The IMA evaluates experience submissions and has published guidelines on qualifying roles — NPA Global will assist you in understanding whether your experience qualifies.
Exam Structure
How many parts are there in CMA USA?
CMA USA has two parts. Part 1 is Financial Planning, Performance & Analytics — covering external financial statements, planning and budgeting, performance management, cost management, internal controls, and technology and analytics. Part 2 is Strategic Financial Management — covering financial statement analysis, corporate finance, decision analysis, risk management, investment decisions, and professional ethics. Both parts must be cleared to earn the CMA designation. The parts can be attempted in any order, though NPA Global recommends Part 1 first for most students due to its foundational content.
What is the format of the CMA USA exam?
Each part of CMA USA is a single four-hour computer-based exam taken at Prometric test centres. The exam has 100 multiple choice questions (MCQs) in the first three hours, followed by two essay questions in the final hour. Candidates must score 50% or above on the MCQ section to proceed to the essays. The combined pass score is 360 out of 500 (72%). Essays test application of knowledge, not just recall, and are graded by IMA-trained assessors. The essay section is where preparation quality shows most clearly.
What is the passing score for CMA USA?
The passing score for each part of CMA USA is 360 out of 500, which equals 72%. This combined score comes from both the MCQ section and the essay section together. Importantly, a minimum score of 50% on the MCQ section is required to be eligible to sit the essays — if you score below 50% on MCQs, the essay section is not evaluated and the attempt is failed. There is no separate minimum requirement for the essay section beyond this gate; the final score is a weighted combined calculation of both sections.
How many times can I attempt CMA USA?
There is no limit on the number of attempts for CMA USA. You can attempt each part as many times as needed within your three-year programme registration period. However, there are only three exam windows per year, and each attempt costs money in exam registration fees. At NPA Global, we emphasise strategic attempt planning — ensuring you are genuinely prepared before sitting to avoid the financial cost and confidence impact of unsuccessful attempts. CA Gaurav will assess your readiness through mock exam performance before recommending you proceed to a live attempt.
Which part should I attempt first — Part 1 or Part 2?
You can attempt either part first — the IMA has no mandatory order. NPA Global’s recommendation for most students is Part 1 first, as it covers foundational management accounting concepts that provide context for the more strategic content in Part 2. For students with a strong financial analysis or corporate finance background, CA Gaurav may recommend starting with Part 2. The right order depends on your specific background, current knowledge, and preparation time available. CA Gaurav will give you a specific recommendation in your first counselling session based on your individual profile.
When are the CMA USA exam windows in India?
CMA USA has three exam windows per year, available globally including India: January/February, May/June, and September/October. Within each window, you choose your exam date based on Prometric centre availability in your city. There is no single fixed exam date — you schedule your slot once registered. This flexibility is valuable for working professionals who need to plan around work schedules and project timelines. NPA Global helps students select the right window based on study progress and readiness, avoiding premature attempts and unnecessary exam fee expenditure.
Where can I give the CMA USA exam in India?
CMA USA exams are administered at Prometric test centres across India in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and several others. You schedule your exam directly through the IMA portal after registering for your chosen window. Centre availability varies by location and time — it is advisable to schedule 4–6 weeks in advance, especially during popular windows like May/June. NPA Global provides full guidance on the Prometric scheduling process and helps students navigate the IMA registration portal as part of the induction support.
Duration & Study
How long does CMA USA take to complete?
CMA USA can be completed in as little as 6 months by a dedicated full-time student, or 12–18 months by a working professional studying 2–3 hours daily. The IMA requires both parts to be cleared within three years of programme registration. Most NPA Global live batch students clear both parts in 12–14 months. Working professionals on the recorded track typically take 14–18 months for both parts. CA Gaurav provides a personalised timeline estimate in the first counselling session based on your specific schedule, background knowledge, and available study hours per week.
How many hours of study does CMA USA require?
Industry estimates suggest 150–170 hours of study per part, or 300–340 hours total. This varies based on your background — candidates with strong accounting or finance foundations may require less; those without formal finance education may need more. For working professionals, 2–3 hours of focused daily study is typically sufficient for each part within a 4–6 month window. At NPA Global, CA Gaurav builds study plans based on the specific hours you have available per week, not on a generic recommended total that ignores your actual schedule and existing knowledge.
Can I study CMA USA while working full-time?
Yes — working professionals are one of the most common student profiles at NPA Global. CMA USA is structured to be achievable alongside full-time employment: two parts, flexible exam windows, and self-paced content. NPA Global’s working professional track is built explicitly for this situation — recorded sessions you can watch at any time, a personalised study plan built around your actual work hours, and doubt-clearing sessions scheduled to fit your calendar. Many NPA Global working professional students clear Part 1 within 5–6 months of enrollment while maintaining full-time employment.
Is CMA USA difficult?
CMA USA is a rigorous professional qualification — exams test application of knowledge, not just recall. Pass rates are lower than most academic exams, particularly for candidates who underestimate the depth of the essay section. However, CMA USA is designed to be achievable within a realistic timeline for a well-prepared candidate. The difficulty is manageable with the right study plan, quality teaching, and honest expectations about preparation time required. At NPA Global, CA Gaurav’s teaching approach emphasises conceptual understanding over memorisation — which is what the CMA USA exam actually tests and rewards.
What is the pass rate for CMA USA?
The IMA publishes global pass rates periodically. Historically, CMA USA pass rates have been in the 40–50% range per attempt, reflecting the qualification’s rigour. Part 2 tends to be more challenging for candidates without a strong corporate finance background. These rates include first-time and repeat attempts. With proper preparation — a structured study plan, quality instruction, and mock exams under timed conditions — well-prepared candidates consistently pass. At NPA Global, mock exam performance is the primary indicator used to determine whether a student is ready to attempt the live exam.
Fees & Cost
What is the total cost of CMA USA?
The total cost of CMA USA includes IMA membership, the CMA programme entrance fee, exam fees for both parts, and coaching fees. The IMA-side costs (membership + entrance + two exam fees) typically total USD 1,000–1,500 depending on membership category, with lower student rates available for those under 30. These fees are paid directly to the IMA in USD. NPA Global’s coaching fees are separate and discussed during the free counselling session. For an accurate total cost estimate based on your specific situation, speak directly to the NPA Global counselling team.
What is the IMA membership fee?
IMA membership is required to register for the CMA exam and is renewed annually. Professional membership is approximately USD 250–280 per year; student membership (for those under 30) is significantly lower. Membership fees are paid directly to the IMA and give access to IMA study resources, the CMA programme, exam scheduling, the global IMA professional community, and continuing education content beyond the exam itself. For current, accurate membership fee information, refer to imanet.org directly, as fees are subject to periodic change. NPA Global will guide you through the IMA membership registration process.
What are the CMA USA exam fees?
CMA USA exam fees are paid directly to the IMA. As of current pricing, the CMA programme entrance fee is approximately USD 250 (paid once at registration), and the exam fee per part is approximately USD 415 for professional IMA members or lower for student members. These fees are paid in USD through the IMA portal and are non-refundable once the exam is scheduled. For current and accurate exam fee information, refer to imanet.org directly, as fees are subject to change. NPA Global will guide you through the complete registration and fee payment process step by step.
What does NPA Global charge for CMA USA coaching?
NPA Global’s CMA USA coaching fees depend on the track (live batch or recorded professional) and are discussed during the free counselling session. Fees are not published on the website because the right programme depends on your background, goals, and timeline — and we want to ensure you enroll in the programme that actually fits your situation. To get a clear breakdown of fees and exactly what is included in each track, book a free counselling session with CA Gaurav. There is no obligation to enroll after the session.
Career & Salary
What jobs can I get after CMA USA?
CMA USA opens doors to management accounting and strategic finance roles including Financial Analyst, FP&A Analyst, FP&A Manager, Management Accountant, Finance Business Partner, Cost & Budget Analyst, Finance Controller, Internal Audit Manager, VP Finance, and CFO. These roles exist across IT/technology MNCs, FMCG companies, banks, consulting firms, manufacturing companies, and pharmaceutical MNCs. CMA USA is particularly valued for FP&A roles — the fastest-growing function in corporate finance — where the qualification’s direct coverage of planning, budgeting, forecasting, and business analysis is immediately applicable to the job.
What is the salary after CMA USA in India?
Salary depends on your prior experience and target role. Fresh graduates with CMA USA typically earn INR 4–7 LPA in entry-level analyst roles at MNCs. With 1–3 years of experience, FP&A or management accounting roles pay INR 7–14 LPA. With 3–6 years, FP&A Manager or Finance Business Partner roles pay INR 14–25 LPA. Senior roles with 7+ years range from INR 25–45 LPA+. For working professionals, CMA USA alone does not automatically increase salary — it makes you eligible for higher-level roles that your existing profile could not previously access, enabling the salary increase through role transition.
Is CMA USA good for FP&A careers?
CMA USA is arguably the most directly relevant professional qualification for an FP&A career. FP&A handles budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, business partnering, and financial modelling — and Part 1 of CMA USA covers planning, budgeting, and performance management in depth, while Part 2 covers financial statement analysis and decision analysis. FP&A is the fastest-growing function in corporate finance in India and globally, with demand consistently exceeding supply of qualified professionals. If FP&A is your target, CMA USA is your most direct qualification route, and CA Gaurav provides specific FP&A transition guidance to NPA Global students.
Is CMA USA better than MBA Finance?
They serve different purposes. An MBA Finance from a top institution provides broad business exposure, a professional network, and brand value — but at significantly higher cost and time investment. CMA USA provides deep specialist competence in management accounting and strategic finance — at lower cost, in less time, and with global portability specifically recognised in finance hiring. For professionals who want to deepen finance expertise and move into FP&A or management accounting leadership, CMA USA often delivers better return on investment. A combined profile — CMA USA plus a relevant MBA — is also a strong positioning for senior finance roles.
Can I work abroad with CMA USA?
Yes. CMA USA is internationally recognised, particularly in North America, the UAE, the UK, and Southeast Asia. The credential is directly portable — it is the same qualification regardless of where it was earned. CMA USA holders from India have successfully transitioned to finance roles in the UAE (a strong market for CMA USA), the US, Canada, Singapore, and other international markets. For professionals specifically targeting the UAE or North American markets, CMA USA provides a credential that international employers actively recognise and value in their management accounting and FP&A hiring decisions.
Do Big 4 firms in India hire CMA USA holders?
Yes. Big 4 firms — Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG — have finance and advisory functions where CMA USA holders work, particularly in management consulting, finance transformation, and FP&A outsourcing practices. Big 4 audit and tax teams are more CA-centric, but advisory, transaction services, and management consulting teams within the Big 4 actively hire CMA USA holders. CA Gaurav’s Big 4 background means NPA Global students receive mentorship directly grounded in how these organisations think about finance talent and what they look for in management accounting professionals.
CMA USA vs Other Qualifications
CMA USA vs ACCA — which is better?
CMA USA and ACCA serve different career purposes and are not direct competitors. ACCA is a comprehensive financial accounting qualification covering audit, taxation, financial reporting, and compliance — for professionals targeting accounting, audit, and financial advisory roles globally. CMA USA is specifically a management accounting qualification — strategic finance, FP&A, performance management, and corporate finance — for professionals targeting the decision-support side of finance. If your goal is audit, financial reporting, or tax, ACCA is more directly relevant. If your goal is FP&A, management accounting, or MNC finance leadership, CMA USA is the better fit.
CMA USA vs CPA USA — what is the difference?
CPA USA (Certified Public Accountant) is the US financial accounting and audit qualification, equivalent in scope to CA India — covering audit, financial reporting, tax, and regulatory compliance. CMA USA is the management accounting qualification focused on strategic finance, FP&A, and business analysis. CPA USA requires passing four sections and is primarily valuable for US public accounting or audit careers. CMA USA has two parts and is globally valuable for management accounting and FP&A roles at corporates. For most Indian finance professionals targeting management roles at MNCs, CMA USA is more relevant and achievable than CPA USA.
CMA USA vs CFA — which should I choose?
CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and CMA USA cover different areas of finance. CFA is investment-focused — portfolio management, equity research, asset valuation, and capital markets analysis. It is the standard credential for professionals working in investment management and research. CMA USA is management accounting and corporate finance — strategic FP&A, cost management, budgeting, and business decision support at operating companies. If your target is investment banking, equity research, or portfolio management, pursue CFA. If your target is FP&A, corporate finance, or management accounting at a company, CMA USA is more directly applicable. Your specific career target should determine the choice.
CMA USA vs CA — how do they compare?
CA (Chartered Accountant) and CMA USA cover overlapping but distinct areas. CA is a comprehensive Indian qualification covering financial accounting, audit, taxation, and compliance — technically deep and highly respected in India, particularly for public practice and large Indian corporates. CMA USA focuses on management accounting, strategic finance, FP&A, and corporate decision-making — globally portable and more directly applicable to FP&A and finance leadership roles at MNCs. CA gives depth in audit and tax; CMA USA gives depth in management accounting. The combination of CA + CMA USA is increasingly recognised as one of the strongest profiles in Indian corporate finance.
Can I do ACCA and CMA USA together?
Yes, and there are specific synergies between the two. ACCA covers the financial accounting, audit, and compliance side; CMA USA covers management accounting and strategic finance. Students who complete ACCA first have a strong foundation in financial reporting and professional ethics that supports CMA USA preparation, particularly in Part 1. Together, the two qualifications create a comprehensive finance professional profile that spans both the compliance and the strategic sides of finance. At NPA Global, we teach both ACCA and CMA USA, and CA Gaurav can advise on the optimal sequencing strategy for your specific career goals.
NPA Global
Does CA Gaurav Sabharwal personally teach CMA USA at NPA Global?
Yes. At NPA Global, CMA USA is taught personally by CA Gaurav Sabharwal — not delegated to junior faculty or outsourced to guest lecturers. CA Gaurav teaches both Part 1 and Part 2 in full: every concept, every live session, and every doubt-clearing call. This is one of NPA Global’s most significant differentiators. CA Gaurav’s Big 4 background, investment banking experience at Nomura, practicing CA status, and 15+ years of teaching are directly reflected in how he contextualises syllabus concepts to real-world finance scenarios — connecting the qualification to the careers it is designed to build.
What is the difference between NPA Global’s live batch and recorded professional track?
NPA Global offers two distinct CMA USA programmes. The live batch is for students and recent graduates: scheduled live sessions led by CA Gaurav, batch-based timelines, exam window planning, and a full career bootcamp including resume building, LinkedIn optimisation, and interview preparation. The recorded professional track is for working professionals: recorded sessions watchable at any time, a personalised study plan built around your work schedule, scheduled doubt-clearing sessions, and career transition guidance for FP&A repositioning and the experienced-hire job market. These are fundamentally different learning experiences, not the same programme with different delivery modes.
Does NPA Global offer placement for CMA USA students?
NPA Global does not operate a traditional placement cell for CMA USA students — and we are honest about why. Placement cells work for freshers entering entry-level roles. For CMA USA students — especially working professionals with existing experience — mid-level finance roles are not filled through institute placement drives. They are filled through LinkedIn, direct applications, referrals, and headhunters. What NPA Global provides instead is career transition support: resume rebuilding, LinkedIn optimisation, interview preparation, and specific guidance on how to position your CMA USA to access the roles you are actually targeting.
What career support does NPA Global offer for working professionals doing CMA USA?
NPA Global’s career support for working professionals is designed specifically for the experienced-hire market. It includes: a personalised career transition roadmap from CA Gaurav based on your background and target roles; resume rebuilding to frame existing experience in management accounting terms relevant to FP&A hiring; LinkedIn profile optimisation for a finance career transition; interview preparation for FP&A and management accounting roles; and specific guidance on which companies and roles are realistic targets given your years of experience. This is practical, personalised support — not a generic career workshop designed for freshers.
How do I book a free CMA USA counselling session at NPA Global?
You can book a free CMA USA counselling session at NPA Global through the counselling form on this page or by contacting the NPA Global team directly. The session is with CA Gaurav Sabharwal personally — not an admissions coordinator. In the session, CA Gaurav will review your background, understand your career goals, and give you an honest assessment of what CMA USA can and cannot do for your specific situation. There is no obligation to enroll, and the session is genuinely focused on helping you make the right decision for your career, not on selling you a programme.
