CMA USA After BCom: Eligibility, Timeline and Career Path

✎ NPA Global 📅 15 October 2026

If you have completed — or are about to complete — your BCom and are wondering what next, CMA USA is one of the fastest ways to move into a well-paid corporate finance career. Here is how it works for BCom graduates.

Are BCom graduates eligible?

Yes. CMA USA requires a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, so a BCom qualifies. You can usually start preparing and sit the exams in your final year, and complete the education requirement when you graduate. Check the current rules on IMA’s website.

A typical timeline after BCom

  1. Months 0–1: join IMA, enter the CMA programme and plan your study schedule.
  2. Months 1–6: prepare for and sit Part 1.
  3. Months 6–12: prepare for and sit Part 2.
  4. In parallel or after: complete two years of relevant work experience to receive the certificate.

Many students start working in finance roles while studying, so the experience requirement is completed alongside the exams.

Why BCom graduates choose CMA USA

  • Short and focused — two parts instead of many papers.
  • Builds on BCom subjects like costing, management accounting and financial management.
  • Strong corporate demand for FP&A and business finance roles.

CMA USA or ACCA after BCom?

If you want management accounting and FP&A, CMA USA is the faster route. If you want audit, financial reporting or advisory roles, ACCA may suit you better — and BCom graduates usually get some ACCA exemptions too. Read our ACCA vs CMA USA guide.
