ACCA vs CMA USA: Which Qualification Should You Choose?
ACCA and CMA USA are the two global finance qualifications most Indian commerce students consider. They are both valuable — but they prepare you for different roles. Here is how to choose.
The core difference
ACCA is a broad accountancy qualification covering financial reporting, audit, tax and strategy. CMA USA, awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), focuses on management accounting — budgeting, cost management, financial planning and analysis (FP&A) and strategic decision-making.
| ACCA | CMA USA | |
|---|---|---|
| Exams | 13 papers | 2 parts |
| Typical duration | 2.5–4 years | 12–18 months |
| Eligibility | From Class 10 (via early-start route) / Class 12 | Bachelor’s degree (can start in final year) |
| Best roles | Audit, financial reporting, advisory, tax | FP&A, costing, corporate finance, CFO track |
| Typical starting salary (India) | ₹6–10 LPA | ₹8–12 LPA |
Choose ACCA if…
- You are still in school or college and want to build a complete accounting foundation.
- You want audit, financial reporting or advisory roles, including at Big 4 firms.
- International mobility matters to you.
Choose CMA USA if…
- You are a graduate or working professional wanting a fast, focused upgrade.
- You enjoy business analysis, budgeting and strategy more than reporting rules.
- You are aiming for FP&A or a CFO-track career in a corporate.
