ACCA Exemptions in India: BCom, CA Inter, CA Final and MBA
Exemptions are one of ACCA’s biggest advantages: if you have already studied a subject at the right level, you may not need to sit that exam again. For many Indian students, exemptions cut months off the qualification and reduce the total cost.
How ACCA exemptions work
ACCA grants exemptions based on your specific qualification and institution — not just the name of your degree. Two BCom graduates from different universities can receive a different number of exemptions. The only reliable check is ACCA’s official exemptions calculator on accaglobal.com. You pay a fee for each exemption, which is lower than the exam fee.
Typical exemptions by background
| Background | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Class 12 | No exemptions — you start from Applied Knowledge. |
| BCom / BBA | Commonly 3–5 exemptions, usually from Applied Knowledge and some Applied Skills papers, depending on your university. |
| CA Intermediate | Several Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exemptions, depending on the groups cleared. |
| Qualified CA | Exemptions from all 9 Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams — you start at Strategic Professional. |
| MBA (Finance) / MCom | Varies by university and subjects studied. |
Should you claim every exemption?
Usually yes — it saves time and money. But if you are weak in a subject that later papers build on (for example, Financial Reporting before SBR), some students choose to sit the exam to strengthen the foundation. A mentor can help you decide paper by paper.
Exemptions do not reduce the experience requirement
Exemptions only apply to exams. You still complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and the 36-month Practical Experience Requirement to become a member.
